The Minister of Mining and Energy of Serbia, Draubavka Gjедовиќ Hanđановиќ, stated that diminished water levels in the Danube River are creating substantial difficulties for the nation’s energy sector. Speaking to RTS, the Minister detailed the impact on hydropower generation, noting that the “Gerdap” facility is currently operating at reduced capacity. Specifically, “Gerdap 1” is running at 20% capacity, while “Gerdap 2” is operating at 30%.
According to Gjедовиќ Hanđановиќ, the current rate of electricity production represents the lowest level observed over the preceding three months. He contrasted this with historical benchmarks, mentioning that the water flow rate has fallen considerably compared to past peaks, such as the 1,500 cubic meters per second recorded in 2003 and 1985. The Minister emphasized that these low water levels necessitate a concentrated effort across the entire energy industry workforce.
He stated that all personnel within the sector must dedicate their efforts to overcoming the operational challenges stemming directly from the reduced water availability. The situation underscores the direct link between river hydrology and the stability of national power production. The ongoing assessment of the Danube’s water levels remains critical to maintaining consistent energy output and managing the sector’s operational demands.
