Macedonia Confirms First Case of Zika Virus Imported from Maldives
Skopje, Macedonia – The Macedonian Institute of Public Health (IPH) has confirmed its first case of Zika virus infection, originating from a resident who contracted the virus while traveling in the Maldives. The announcement, made on June 19, 2026, at 17:50, was disseminated through Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and email. The individual, who returned to Macedonia following a trip from May 20th to 28th, developed symptoms consistent with a Zika virus infection.
These included fever, muscle pain, and joint pain, alongside a fever and a pale appearance. Following his return, laboratory testing at the IPH’s Department of Virology confirmed the presence of the zika virus. Investigations revealed the man was infected by a mosquito during his stay in the Maldives.
