The American Geological Institute (USGS) recorded an earthquake at 7:34 a.m. local time. The epicenter was located near San Jose del Palmar in the department of Chocó, at a depth of 107 kilometers.
Preliminary reports indicate that the event resulted in significant casualties, with the number of dead and injured increasing as new information becomes available. In addition to this event, a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Colombia. Reports confirm that at least 82 people have died as a direct result of the strong earthquake.
The death toll has risen significantly following new reports from Pereira, one of the areas that sustained substantial damage. Oscar Leonel Ochoa, the head of local police, informed Caracol Radio that the city of Pereira alone accounted for at least 47 fatalities. This figure contrasts with earlier statements made by the city’s mayor, Mauricio Salazar, who had previously reported 40 deaths and attributed responsibility for the casualties to authorities in the department of Risaralda.
