The ZNMS Association of Macedonian Journalists has voiced serious concerns regarding direct threats made against columnist Errol Rizaov. The association highlighted instances of calls for violence and potential ethnic-based damage targeting newsrooms, specifically referencing comments made on Rizaov’s official Facebook page. These comments reportedly led to the deletion of his column by the publication Independent.mk.
ZNMS has formally requested that the Ministry of Internal Affairs conduct a thorough investigation into these incidents. The journalists’ association emphasized that the nature of the comments included explicit threats targeting Rizaov’s physical safety and life. As cited by ZNMS, the threatening commentary included statements such as, “Can a junkie come under siege at this juncture as the house is being cleared with a gun?” Another noted comment read, “Is there anyone who can solve it Errol in an express manner?!”
The concerns raised by ZNMS underscore the perceived danger faced by media professionals in the Macedonian context.
The association’s action serves as a formal appeal for state intervention to address the documented threats against Rizaov and other journalists. The involvement of ZNMS highlights the ongoing professional concerns within the Macedonian press regarding safety and freedom of expression following such publicized threats.
