Authorities in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County have reported detecting a localized, short-term fecal contamination event at the Bilin beach in Lumbarda, located on the island of Korcula. The contamination has been attributed to elevated concentrations of decomposed Escherichia coli bacteria in the seawater, which has reportedly affected the natural current flow. The finding was confirmed during the sixth routine inspection conducted to assess the quality of the coastal waters.
According to the Institute for Public Health of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, the analysis results indicated that the levels of Escherichia coli at the Bilin beach surpassed established thresholds for safe recreational use. Due to this pollution incident, the local authorities have advised the public regarding the water quality. The Institute emphasized that the detection of elevated bacteria levels necessitated immediate public notification.
Furthermore, the Wildlife Inspection Authority announced that water sampling and monitoring procedures will remain in effect until the pollution levels subside and the water quality is confirmed to have returned to acceptable standards.
