Barcelona has initiated a proactive measure to safeguard outdoor personnel against the risks associated with intense heat. In response to anticipated high temperatures during local celebrations, the municipality began distributing specialized monitoring devices to various groups of workers. Approximately 1,400 electronic thermometers were provided to employees whose duties require them to work outdoors, including street cleaning crews, park maintenance staff, and waste collection workers.
These advanced thermometers are designed to monitor the body temperature of the workers in real time. The system alerts personnel—through audible signals and vibrations—when the measured temperature indicates a high risk of heat-related health hazards. Upon activation, the protocol mandates that the affected workers cease their duties immediately.
This initiative aims to significantly reduce the incidence of heatstroke among the city’s labor force during periods of extreme heat. Pep Limona, the prevention coordinator for the city’s park and garden service, acknowledged the utility of the technology but also highlighted the need for continuous operational review. Limona stated that further meetings are required to refine and improve the overall process surrounding the deployment and use of these critical safety tools for the workers.
The deployment underscores the city’s commitment to occupational safety as temperatures rise.
