FICO PREZIVEA AND GLAZA POVEDA: The Slovak parliament voted on the matter

Slovak Government Secures Budget Vote Amidst Land Ownership Concerns

The Slovak government successfully obtained a vote of support in parliament following a contentious debate surrounding long-term land ownership. All 78 delegates representing the tripartite coalition led by Prime Minister Robert Fico voted in favor of the cabinet’s proposed budget. However, the vote was preceded by significant opposition, with 54 delegates – comprising a majority of the 150 seats – casting their votes against the proposal.

The impetus for the vote stemmed from concerns regarding the substantial influence of long-term land ownership on the Slovak economy. Following a report from Eurostat in November, which indicated 59.7% of gross domestic product (GDP) was attributed to long-term land holdings, the figure had risen to 61.4% according to the Slovak Statistical Office. This prompted the opposition to file a complaint with the courts.

Prime Minister Robert Fico initiated the parliamentary process to secure budget approval, reflecting the government’s position on the matter. The vote for support represents 50% of the votes within parliament. The debate highlights ongoing concerns about the economic impact of land ownership within Slovakia.
