7.5 Million Euros Allocated to Drin River Dolphin Protection
A €7.5 million investment in the protection of the critically endangered Drin River dolphin was announced following the conclusion of the 10th Drin River Conference held in Struga on June 2, 2026. The funding will address the ongoing threats to the dolphin’s survival and contribute to the species’ preservation. The decision was reached as part of the Memorandum of Understanding for joint management of the Drin river dolphin, established in 2011.
This agreement involves Macedonia, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, and Albania. Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Aleksandar Nikoloski, delivered a video message outlining the significance of the initiative. He emphasized that the Drin river dolphin holds considerable political, economic, and environmental importance for the entire Balkan region.
Nikoloski highlighted that collaborative management, as demonstrated over the past decade, remains the most effective strategy for safeguarding this vulnerable population. The project represents a crucial step in ensuring the long-term survival of the Drin river dolphin, building upon the established framework of international cooperation. The investment underscores the continued commitment to protecting this unique species within the Drin river ecosystem.
