According to the new framework established by UEFA, VAR is not intended to supersede the primary referee’s judgment.
Instead, the system is designed to support the main referee, who retains the authority to deliver the final decision. UEFA stipulated that VAR intervention should be restricted to situations where the referee’s call is demonstrably incorrect or when a clear-cut incident has been overlooked. Furthermore, the guidelines addressed procedural accuracy, particularly regarding player identification.
It was confirmed that while VAR can rectify instances where the wrong player has been incorrectly attributed an action, it cannot alter the fundamental nature of the mistake or the associated disciplinary penalty. These revised protocols aim to safeguard the integrity of officiating by establishing clear parameters for when and how the VAR system can be utilized. The updated procedures mandate specific checks to ensure that the technology functions as a support mechanism rather than a replacement for on-field judgment.
