Kochani Disco Tragedy Linked to Licensing Issues, Leading to New Regulatory Measures

Kochani, Republic of North Macedonia – The recent tragedy at a disco in Kochani was attributed to a licensing discrepancy, revealing widespread non-compliance within the region’s nightlife sector. Investigations uncovered that the disco’s operating license had not undergone the required legal procedures, a situation mirrored by numerous other discos and clubs operating without proper authorization. Following these findings, authorities took decisive action, closing several establishments lacking valid licenses.

The situation extended beyond the disco incident, impacting the Macedonian firefighters operating in Bulgaria. They were previously transporting goods without a license for international transport, a consequence of the broader licensing deficiencies. In response, the Ministry for Digital Transformation has implemented new measures utilizing a digital platform designed to prevent future occurrences.

This SMART license system, presented by Minister Stefan Andonovski, establishes a comprehensive electronic system for issuing, verifying, and tracking licenses. The platform is intended not to simply address existing issues but to fundamentally transform service delivery. This initiative represents a practical step in the digital transformation of existing services and aims to ensure all businesses operate within legal parameters.

The implementation of these new regulations will significantly reduce the risk of similar incidents and ensure compliance across the sector.
