Furthermore, the Russian embassy in Vienna issued a statement calling upon the government to explore the designation of the Mauthausen camp as a World Heritage Site. The embassy specifically highlighted the historical significance of Leobersdorf, noting that it operated as a subcamp of Mauthausen. According to records, the site held approximately 400 women and girls, many aged 23 or older.
These individuals were subjected to forced labor at a nearby military factory under the regime of the Nazi perpetrators. The conditions endured by the internees were reported to be harsh, resulting in the deaths of more than half of those imprisoned there. The proposed commercial build-out on this historically sensitive ground has prompted international concern regarding the preservation of memory sites.
