UNICEF Report Highlights Climate Risks for Children in North Macedonia
A new global warning from UNICEF identifies climate change as the most significant threats to children in North Macedonia. The report details the pervasive impacts of rising temperatures, drought conditions, and extreme heat on the well-being of young people. According to the data, a substantial portion of the country – 73 percent – is affected by ongoing droughts.
Furthermore, 87 percent of children are exposed to elevated air temperatures, and nearly all children – 99.9 percent – experience extreme heat. The report emphasizes that the detrimental effects of these climate shifts are continuing to impact children’s health, development, and overall quality of life. Specifically, the changing climate is creating a daily reality of extreme heat, droughts, and wildfires.
“Children in North Macedonia grow up in a climate that is changing, which is a shame,” stated the report. While global efforts to protect children are underway, the increasing strain on the environment is exacerbating negative impacts on their well-being. The findings underscore the urgent need for continued action to mitigate climate change and safeguard the future of children in the region.
The report utilizes data regarding the percent of children exposed to these conditions.
