According to the weekly epidemiological bulletin released by the Institute for Public Health (IPH), a total of 38 cases of West Nile fever were recorded between the start of the year and August 18. Of these infections, four fatalities were identified among patients diagnosed with neuroinvasive West Nile fever disease. The bulletin specifies that all registered cases throughout 2026 presented with neuroinvasive symptoms, including encephalitis and/or meningitis.
Furthermore, all affected individuals required hospitalization. The hospitalization data indicates that 37 patients were admitted to the ICU for infectious diseases and fever states, while one patient was treated at AIDS Simitis. Analyzing the incidence by month revealed fluctuations in the number of affected individuals.
The highest percentage of reported cases was recorded in July, with 24 instances documented. Following this peak, 11 cases were registered in August, while June saw two recorded instances, and one case was noted at AIDS Simitis. These figures underscore ongoing public health monitoring regarding West Nile virus activity.
