EU Introduces New Customs Regulations for Distance Purchases
Brussels – Starting July 1, 2026, the European Union will implement revised customs regulations affecting shipments originating from within the EU. The changes aim to standardize customs procedures for goods purchased online and expand oversight for international deliveries. Previously, shipments exceeding €150 arriving from EU territories were exempt from customs duties.
Under the new rules, a fixed customs duty of €3 will be applied to all shipments over this threshold. Following this implementation, purchases made online from EU territories will be subject to customs supervision and clearance procedures. This includes the addition of applicable duties and associated costs, which will be in addition to the €3 fixed duty.
The regulations specifically address shipments of over €150 and also extend to new rules for shipments purchased from distance in third countries, such as Cyprus or the UK. Following any instance of non-compliance with these new customs procedures, importers will be subject to increased scrutiny. The changes are designed to ensure consistent application of customs regulations across the EU and provide a clearer framework for international trade.
The new rules will be enforced from the date of implementation.
