The drama of the trial is over: Remek- the case of Modigliani to be closed, as it was plundered by the Nazis

Supreme Court Orders Nakhmad Estate to Restore $25 Million Modigliani Clutch

In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court has ordered the estate of Deivid Nakhmad to restore a stolen 1918 “A man with a stop” clutch by Modigliani, valued at $25 million. The court’s decision follows a legal battle concerning the provenance of the artwork. The clutch, originally purchased at auction in 1996 for $3.2 million, was acquired from the estate of the skilled merchant Deivid Nakhmad.

The court determined that the artwork was either stolen or illegally transferred during the period of the Nazi occupation of Paris. Specifically, the ruling cites the flight of Jewish collector and merchant Oskar Schteitner, who was escaping Paris at the time. The Nakhmad estate had contested the claim, arguing that the clutch’s history involved illicit transfer during Schteitner’s departure.

However, the Supreme Court upheld the assertion that the clutch’s value now exceeds $25 million dollars. The court has granted the Nakhmad estate 30 days to undertake the necessary repairs and restoration of the valuable Modigliani piece. This case highlights the complexities of art provenance and the ongoing efforts to trace the ownership of culturally significant items.
