Rare Illuminated Manuscript of Arthur Legend to Sell for $2.7 Million

One of the most significant illuminated manuscripts detailing the legend of King Arthur is set to be auctioned, with an estimated price of $2.7 million. The manuscript, known as the Graal Clermont-Tonnerre, is a 13th-century work produced by the Cistercian order and represents a crucial piece of medieval literature. Dating from between 1290 and 1310, the manuscript is written in Old French and focuses on the Lancelot-Grail cycle, a key element in the Arthurian stories.

It’s considered one of the most important documents relating to the quest for the Holy Grail and the tales surrounding King Arthur. The manuscript was previously held in private collections. Eugenio Donadoni, director of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts at the Cistercian, noted that the work was meticulously created on parchment.

Experts anticipate a competitive bidding process, with the potential sale price falling within the range of $2 to $2.7 million.
