Syria gains its first parliament after the fall of Assad

The formation of the first parliament in the era of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was announced today with the presentation of a list comprising 70 delegates, who were elected by interim leader Ahmad al-Shaar. According to Mohammed Taha al-Ahmad, head of Syria’s election commission, the new legislative body, which consists of 210 members, is scheduled to convene its inaugural session on Monday. Upon arrival, the delegates will take an oath, and subsequently, the Parliamentary Presidential Council will be elected.

The group of 70 delegates selected by al-Shaar includes 15 women, thereby increasing the total number of female members within the parliament to 22. Syrian authorities have scheduled the initial phase of parliamentary elections for October. However, the southern region of Sweida remains exempt from this process, as it is currently under the control of armed rebels who oppose the central government’s authority.

The establishment of this parliament marks a significant procedural step within the current political framework of Syria.
