SMRTO NOSNA ZAKANA KAJ GEVGELIJA – Dangerous grenade found on the border with Greece

Pyrotechnicians from the Directorate for Security (DZS) have issued warnings regarding the discovery of unexploded ordnance near the national border with Greece. Officials cautioned the public that any unexploded grenade found in the vicinity poses a significant danger, with a potential radius of hazard extending up to 150 meters. They stressed that even a minor impact can trigger the device’s detonation.

Specifically, the DZS reported that a 75mm artillery grenade, identified as originating from the First World War, was recently found in the area known as “Kupot,” located in the southwest of Gevgelija, close to the state border. This incident involved a stockpile of unexploded ordnance that has since been safely disarmed by relevant specialized services. According to DZS pyrotechnician Georgi Stefanov, the grenade is classified as a type of towed projectile from the First World War.

While he noted that the device is extremely difficult to detonate, its status as an unexploded item remains highly volatile. Stefanov emphasized that the grenade retains significant potential energy, capable of causing an instantaneous explosion even from a small impact. Authorities continue to advise the public to exercise extreme caution when traversing areas near the border.

The discovery underscores the ongoing risk associated with unexploded munitions, requiring specialized teams to handle the recovery and neutralization process to ensure public safety.
