Violence erupted Saturday evening at a migrant reception center located in Sintica, near the border region associated with Greece. According to reports from the German agency DPA, the incident involved approximately 500 migrants, some of whom were reportedly scheduled for deportation. Authorities stated that the unrest began when a group of migrants reportedly broke into a building, leading to the setting of fires targeting the police station and other property within the facility.
During the ensuing disorder, significant damage occurred, including the destruction of buildings, common areas, and surveillance equipment. Several migrants managed to breach the outer perimeter fence and exit the site, which is situated near the border with Bulgaria. The police responded to the escalating situation.
Official sources reported that during the violence, five individuals were injured, and a total of 17 people were arrested. Initial police actions on site resulted in three arrests. The confrontation between the migrants and the police resulted in widespread property damage at the reception center.
The authorities are currently investigating the full extent of the damages and the sequence of events that led to the confrontation involving the migrants.
