Ambassadors from 32 member nations have voiced support for a proposed NATO initiative originating in Brussels. The plan outlines a substantial financial commitment from the alliance to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities over the next two years. Specifically, NATO intends to allocate 70 billion euros annually for the arming and training of Ukrainian soldiers, amounting to a total expenditure of 140 billion euros.
Furthermore, the proposal includes providing Ukraine with a loan totaling 60 billion euros across the years 2026 and 2027. According to reports from DPA, NATO member states would be required to contribute 40 billion euros per year from their respective national budgets to support this effort. The text notes that the official approval of this five-day plan in Ankara is being complicated by a reduction in support from some NATO leaders.
A significant portion of the necessary funding is expected to be covered by European member countries and Canada, particularly as the structure of NATO’s financial aid to Ukraine changes under different leadership projections. Despite these shifts, Germany has maintained its commitment, announcing that it will provide 11.5 billion euros to Ukraine in 2026.
