Macedonia Maintains Positive Foreign Policy Orientation, Awaits Institutional Changes

Skopje – Macedonia continues to pursue a positive strategic orientation within its foreign policy framework. However, the government maintains that the current conditions do not exist for significant institutional reforms. This stance is primarily driven by concerns regarding regional stability and the ongoing dialogue with neighboring Bulgaria.

Speaking on June 4th, 2026, at 11:05, Foreign Minister Timcho Moutsonski emphasized the need for a transborder dialogue as a key catalyst for change. He reiterated that this dialogue can be initiated if institutional guarantees are established. Currently, only a portion of Macedonia’s member states possess a dedicated Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.

The primary concern stems from Bulgaria’s anticipation that all member states will soon hold this position. Moutsonski highlighted that the establishment of a transborder dialogue remains a central objective. He stressed that the government remains committed to a positive orientation and believes that the necessary conditions for institutional adjustments will emerge with the progress of this dialogue.

The government continues to advocate for a measured approach, prioritizing the creation of a stable environment for future reforms.
