Mucunski: Economic diplomacy should open new markets and increase the competitiveness of Macedonian companies

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Tihomir Mucunski, emphasized the critical role of economic diplomacy in facilitating access to new international markets and enhancing the competitiveness of Macedonian enterprises. Speaking at an event titled “Transforming greed into competitiveness: Building resilient businesses in an unknown world,” organized by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Mucunski addressed the need for strategic state involvement. According to Mucunski, the government’s function should not be to supplant the private sector.

Instead, the state must focus on establishing the necessary conditions that allow entrepreneurship, knowledge, and capital to generate novel opportunities. This strategic support is viewed as essential for Macedonian businesses aiming to expand their global reach. The address underscored that proactive diplomatic efforts are crucial for opening up new avenues for trade and investment.

By fostering a supportive environment, Macedonia can better leverage its private sector strengths to improve its overall competitiveness on the world stage. Mucunski’s comments highlight a policy shift towards enabling market access and strengthening the operational capacity of local companies. The discussion, which took place on July 3, 2026, reiterated the commitment to using diplomatic tools to support economic growth.

The core message remains that while the private sector drives innovation, the state must actively build the infrastructure and diplomatic pathways required for Macedonian businesses to achieve greater competitiveness in an evolving global economy.
