Mincëv: Macedonia should go to the EU, but not at the price of its identity, language and history

Minev Urges Macedonia’s EU Path with Safeguards for Identity

Goran Minev, Minister for Real Administration and General Secretary of the Movement ZNAM – For Our Macedonia, expressed reservations regarding the ongoing debate surrounding Macedonia’s potential entry into the European Union. Speaking on Channel 5 TV on June 19, 2026, at 9:59 am, Minev emphasized the importance of preserving Macedonia’s core identity. He stated that while Macedonia should pursue a path toward the EU, this should not come at the expense of its language, history, and cultural heritage.

Minev argued that any solution must address the existing questions surrounding Macedonian identity without creating new ones. The central concern, according to Minev, extends beyond simply incorporating Bulgarian elements into the Constitution. He questioned the potential ramifications of such a move, posing the hypothetical scenario: “Hypothetically, we will introduce the Bulgarians into the Constitution tomorrow.

And what will happen next? If the next vote is for Goche Delchev? Is there a Macedonian who will agree that Goche Delchev is not a Macedonian?”

Minev’s comments reflect a broader debate within Macedonia regarding the terms of integration and the protection of its national narrative.
