Macedonian Ecological Society Seeks Support for Owl Nesting Box Program

The Macedonian Ecological Society (MES) is appealing for public support to bolster the protection of the owl population within North Macedonia. A tax initiative, launched on June 17, 2026, at 11:30 a.m., aims to fund the production and installation of nesting boxes specifically designed for this endangered bird. The MES is requesting symbolic donations from citizens to facilitate the creation of safe habitats.

The organization highlights the declining numbers of owls, which were once prevalent throughout the Kotlin region of Macedonia. Currently, the species is primarily located in areas including Ovche Pole, the Skopska kotlina, and the Podvarat region near Demir Kapija. According to MES petitioners, habitat loss – specifically the diminishing number of old trees and natural nesting cavities – represents a significant threat to the owl’s survival.

The society’s efforts focus on mitigating this issue through the strategic placement of new nesting structures. The initiative underscores the importance of continued conservation efforts within the Macedonian ecosystem and seeks widespread community engagement to ensure the long-term survival of this vulnerable species. —
