Deputy Amar Mecinovic, a member of the Levica party, stated that the ongoing blockage of a proposed Election Law is the result of a long-standing political arrangement among the country’s major parties. According to Mecinovic, this arrangement is designed to maintain the existing electoral model, which he argues primarily benefits the leading political groups. In his statement, Mecinovic questioned the reasons for the law’s impasse within the Parliament.
He asserted that for the past three decades, the rules governing elections have been formulated according to the desires of major political parties, rather than reflecting the will of the citizenry or the actual needs of the democratic system. Mecinovic suggested that the lack of a new Election Law is indicative of a persistent effort to prevent its passage. He specifically named the Socialist Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) and VMRO-DPMNE as parties central to this alleged political inertia.
The deputy maintained that the current situation suggests the established political structure prioritizes preserving its own advantageous electoral framework. His comments frame the legislative deadlock not as a procedural issue, but as a strategic mechanism employed by powerful political entities to safeguard their established influence over the democratic process.
