Macedonian Encyclopedia: A Notable, Yet Ultimately Unsuccessful, Project
The Macedonian Encyclopedia, the first and, to date, only comprehensive work of its kind, was released on June 1, 2026, at 10:47 a.m. Originally published in 2009, the encyclopedia’s ambitious undertaking quickly proved problematic. Just one and a half months after its release, the project was withdrawn from circulation.
Now, significant resources dedicated to the Macedonian encyclopedia – including 260 employees and substantial honorariums – are largely forgotten. The project’s impact is minimal, with academic rooms now primarily occupied by dust, moths, and beetles. Initial enthusiasm surrounding the publication was notable, with some individuals deeply disappointed they did not secure a complete volume.
A dedicated group formed around the encyclopedia, though it was specifically warned against overly zealous promotion. Within a year, half of the group’s members were expelled, and the remaining individuals received no further recognition. The circumstances surrounding the Macedonian encyclopedia highlight a complex situation, and even with its initial ambition, it ultimately failed to achieve lasting impact or widespread readership.
