Macedonia to Launch New ‘Vesikla’ Center for Digital Language Development
Next week will see the announcement of “Vesikla,” Macedonia’s first center for intellectual development, according to Minister for Digital Transformation Stefan Andonovski. The initiative aims to establish a robust digital foundation for the Macedonian language and culture. “Vesikla” is a key project focused on digitizing the Macedonian language corpus and developing a large language model.
This model will be accessible to institutions, academic organizations, businesses, and citizens across Macedonia. The primary goal is to reduce reliance on foreign-developed technologies that may not adequately account for the specific context of the Macedonian language. Andonovski explained that the center will function as a collaborative hub, fostering the creation of a “home digital base” to fully integrate the Macedonian language, culture, and identity into modern technological advancements.
He emphasized the importance of this work in ensuring accurate representation and minimizing dependence on external actors. The project seeks to strengthen the Macedonian language’s presence within digital spaces, ultimately promoting its continued development and recognition. The center’s creation represents a significant step in supporting the Macedonian language and its future within the digital landscape.
