Macedonia Weighs Direct Israel Talks Amidst Ongoing Conflict
Macedonian authorities are evaluating direct negotiations with israel as a potential path to resolving the ongoing conflict initiated in March. The situation escalated following Hezbollah’s entry into israel, supported by Iran, which triggered retaliatory air and ground operations by israel resulting in over 4,000 fatalities in Lebanon. Despite four rounds of talks between Lebanon and israel, which commenced in April, a definitive resolution has not been achieved.
Initial progress emerged with an agreement between Iran and Hezbollah, formalized in a memorandum of understanding. This document called for a cessation of hostilities on both sides of the conflict, including within Lebanon. The agreement, facilitated by Iranian and Hezbollah representatives, significantly impacted the Lebanese state.
Leaders, including President Jozsef Aoun, have asserted that Tehran’s compliance cannot be mandated. These ongoing talks since the initial escalation represent a key element in the diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation and bring an end to the protracted conflict.
