Wounded Soldier Finds Ancient Bronze Coin During Somerset Dig

Kevin Minto, a wounded soldier, recently found a significant bronze coin dating back to the 3rd century, according to CNN. The discovery occurred in 2018 while Minto, a truck driver, was working in a field near Ilminster. The coin, weighing 48 grams, is remarkably well-preserved and features a scarab stone centered with an engraving of the goddess Victoria in a double transport depiction.

Minto, 68, initially needed time to assess his find. The discovery unfolded after Minto stumbled upon a hidden box in the same field a few days prior. Inside, he located a metal detector – a device he had previously used in the area.

Remarkably, a year before this latest find, Minto also discovered a similar hidden box containing a metal detector. If sold, the coin would likely be displayed at the Somerset Museum. This significant find highlights the ongoing potential for archaeological discoveries within the region and the unexpected rewards associated with the work of a dedicated soldier.
