New Law Aims to Enhance Tobacco Product Protection in North Macedonia

The Assembly of North Macedonia yesterday passed the first reading of the law on protection from the use of tobacco or related products. Minister of Health Azir Aliu presented the legislation during the plenary session, describing it as a crucial step in advancing public health. The core objective of the new law is to bolster protection for vulnerable groups, including children, young people, non-smokers, and all citizens, from exposure to tobacco and related products in public spaces.

The Ministry emphasized that the regulatory framework aligns with current trends, encompassing traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and other nicotine-containing products. According to official data, tobacco use contributes to over 3,600 annual deaths within the country. Furthermore, the Ministry highlighted the economic impact of a lack of comprehensive regulation surrounding these products.

This first reading marks a significant development in North Macedonia’s efforts to combat tobacco use and safeguard public health. The law is expected to establish a robust legal framework for managing the use and sale of tobacco and nicotine products.
