WHO Addresses Ebola Outbreak in DRC’s Ituri Province

BUNIA, DRC – The World Health Organization (WHO), through its representative Marie-Rose Belizer in Bunia, the capital of the Ituri province in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is responding to an ongoing epidemic originating from the forest. Belizer stated that the exact origins of the infection remain unclear, with investigations ongoing to determine whether the outbreak occurred within work environments or private settings. The WHO is actively urging smaller clinics throughout the region to receive guidance on preventing contamination and equipping staff with the necessary tools to effectively manage and halt the spread of the disease.

A survey of 177 clinics revealed that only four possess the capacity to both prevent contamination and treat all of their employees. Notably, the epidemic is being caused by only 10 individuals among the infected exhibiting symptoms consistent with Ebola, primarily characterized by fever. Despite the seriousness of the situation, many residents have remained at home for extended periods, based on the belief that they have contracted the illness.

Belizer emphasized the need for continued vigilance and coordinated efforts to contain the outbreak and mitigate its impact within the Ituri province of the DRC. The WHO is prioritizing the provision of resources and expertise to local healthcare providers.
