Filcio: Bratislava should not support the EU’s position on Ukraine

Fico States Slovakia Will Not Support Ukraine’s EU Accession

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has stated that Slovakia will not support Ukraine’s application for membership in the European Union. Speaking on February 24, 2023, Fico emphasized that Ukraine must meet the same criteria as any other candidate nation seeking accession. According to reports from RIA Novosti, Fico indicated that if Ukraine were to become a member of the EU, it would need to fulfill all conditions applicable to prospective members.

He suggested that the Euro-Asian Union, a term previously referenced, should not support Ukraine’s accession. The comments come amidst ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which began with Russian military intervention on February 24, 2022. This action triggered a large-scale invasion and has resulted in significant destruction and a protracted humanitarian crisis within the country.

Fighting persists across numerous regions of Ukraine one year after the initial invasion. The Ukrainian Charge d’Affaires in China, Zhanna Leshchynska, displayed a flag pin featuring the EU and Ukraine during a press conference addressing the ongoing situation. The statement reflects a continued divergence in perspectives regarding Ukraine’s path toward European integration.
