Macedonia’s EU Accession Process Faces Continued Challenges, Says Transport Minister

Aleksandar Nikoloski, the Macedonian Minister of Transport and Deputy Prime Minister, has stated that the European Union’s approach to regional integration is creating a significant obstacle for the country’s accession process. Speaking in an interview with Koch, Nikoloski expressed frustration with what he perceives as a lack of substantive discussion regarding Macedonia’s inclusion within the european framework. Nikoloski argued that the EU primarily focuses on countries within regions already slated for membership.

He noted a disparity in information access compared to colleagues from other regions, suggesting a perceived “first or second chance” approach to integration. He referenced a similar situation with Croatia in 2013, indicating that the possibility of continued discussion regarding remaining integration problems, particularly concerning Macedonia, remains limited. The Minister emphasized that the current situation is “unfair” and an “insult” to the region as a whole.

He reiterated that the EU’s focus on specific regions creates a disadvantage for countries outside those areas. Nikoloski’s comments highlight ongoing challenges within the european integration process and the differing perspectives on timelines and criteria for membership among various regions.
