The European Commission announced on Monday that the e-commerce platform AliExpress will be subject to a fine totaling 550 million euros. This penalty stems from the Commission’s determination that AliExpress failed to meet its obligations under the Digital Services Act, specifically regarding the mitigation of risks associated with the goods sold on its platform. The regulatory body determined that the company had not adequately established processes to calculate and mitigate the dangers posed by the sale of illegal, unsafe, or counterfeit products.
The substantial financial penalty was calculated based on several factors, including the inherent nature of the transaction, the severity of the risk posed to European Union users, and the duration of the non-compliance. To rectify these systemic failures, AliExpress has been mandated to submit a comprehensive shareholder plan to the Commission by October 20, 2026. This plan must detail concrete measures designed to eliminate the violations related to calculating and mitigating systemic risks associated with the platform’s operations.
Oversight for the implementation of these required measures will fall under the European Digital Services Selection Board. The Commission expects these structural changes to ensure greater adherence to EU digital market standards for all listed products.
