EP GOSUB WAS FINALLY DECIDED FOR MACEDONIA: What is the disputed issue 73?

European Parliament Rejects Resolution on Macedonia’s EU Path

Brussels – The European Parliament voted against a motion concerning Macedonia’s progress toward membership, a decision reflecting ongoing complexities within the bloc. The resolution, proposed by Vajt and debated during a recent European Union meeting, received a final vote of 411 in favor, 120 against, and 120 abstentions. The motion itself was ultimately rejected by the assembly.

A total of 338 delegates voted against the resolution, while 126 voted in favor. Crucially, the final resolution did not include references to the Second Protocol stemming from the Treaty of Good Neighborliness between Macedonia and Bulgaria until a successful outcome could be achieved. The resolution, numbered 73, emphasized the need for a Joint Expert Commission to produce “clear and binding results.” This commission was tasked with utilizing “objective, authentic and proven historical sources and documents,” aligning with the stipulations of the Second Protocol.

The rejection highlights continued debate surrounding historical interpretations and the implementation of agreements related to Macedonia’s path toward European integration. The outcome underscores the significant challenges remaining in securing a unified position within the European Parliament regarding the country’s future.
