Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi inaugurated the “New Delta” initiative, a major undertaking designed to convert arid desert areas into productive agricultural land. This ambitious project aims to significantly bolster domestic food security, thereby reducing Egypt’s reliance on imported goods and generating over two million job opportunities. The opening ceremony was held in the new delta region, situated west of the traditional Nile Delta, coinciding with the date palm harvest.
The “New Delta” is characterized by proponents as one of Egypt’s most extensive land transformation efforts. Upon completion, the project is projected to cover an area of approximately 9,000 square kilometers. According to reports, the primary objectives of this large-scale project include boosting the nation’s total arable land by 15 percent.
This expansion is designed to enhance local production across various commodities, specifically targeting a reduction in the importation of dates and vegetables, while simultaneously boosting agricultural exports. The development of this new land is crucial for diversifying the nation’s food supply chain. By developing this expansive area, the project seeks to create a self-sustaining agricultural hub, strengthening economic resilience within the region and the wider delta.
