A new law has been enacted in North Macedonia, establishing a framework that permits citizens, local authorities, and small enterprises to invest in the production, utilization, and sharing of green energy. This legislation specifically addresses energy derived from non-fossil sources, categorized as renewable sources. The citizens’ organization Ecosafety reports that this development allows individuals to establish energy cooperatives.
These cooperatives are empowered to produce, store, use, and sell electricity. Furthermore, they have the mechanism to distribute the generated energy among their members through inter-company agreements. The legal framework offers several operational pathways for these cooperatives.
They can operate independently or opt to purchase the right to function within a regulated energy market. By achieving the status of a regulated producer, the cooperatives can also access various support measures provided under the new law. Ecosafety notes that the new legislation does not diminish existing rights.
The core intent of the law is to democratize access to renewable energy by enabling decentralized production. This structure aims to enhance the utilization of diverse renewable sources by empowering local communities and smaller economic entities to become active participants in the energy sector.
