EU’s EMS to Reduce Support for EVN Home Utility Costs
Sofia, Bulgaria – The State Enterprise of the European Union (EMS) will be scaling back its full financial support for the universal supplier EVN Home, effective next year. Energy Minister Sanja Bogianovska announced that the EMS will transition from covering 100% of the electricity costs for households and small consumers to covering 70%. This adjustment marks the final phase of reforms undertaken by the reform agency, according to bogianovska.
The shift in support reflects ongoing challenges within the Bulgarian energy market. Current low electricity prices, coupled with the closure of coal mines, are contributing factors. Bogianovska indicated a potential for further price reductions in the coming period, though this remains subject to market fluctuations.
“This represents the completion of all planned reforms,” stated bogianovska. “We are proactively addressing the evolving needs of consumers while ensuring a stable energy supply.”
To mitigate potential risks associated with fluctuating prices, the government has developed a contingency plan – referred to as “plan B” – which anticipates a possible revision of electricity tariffs at a higher regulatory level. The move ensures continued support for consumers until such a review can be finalized.
