According to the military report, the incidents occurred in the southern and northern parts of the Baltic Sea, where Swedish airspace was not disturbed, reports the Nordic Defence Sector. The “Gripen” aircraft were sent to identify and track Russian aircraft. The Swedish air force assessed that the Russian aircraft involved were “Su-24” and “Su-34”, and that the allied fighter aircraft were also involved, so that the operation was aimed at neutralizing the region.
Vice Admiral Eva Skuge Hällström assessed that the Russian deployment represented a “serious and repeated model” that endangered the safety and territorial integrity of the Swedish and other NATO allies, and that the air force had increased its presence in the region due to the heightened activity. The Swedish armed forces assessed that due to the heightened activity in the region, they had increased their presence there as well.
