ASOM: The law on the games at the start will push the black market and threaten jobs

The Association of Sports Promoters of Macedonia (ASOM) has expressed significant concern regarding the recently adopted law on games on the day. ASOM contends that the legislation creates a substantial economic and legal gap, arguing that its implementation will not safeguard citizens as intended. Instead, the organization predicts it will foster a legal market while simultaneously enabling the expansion of the illegal gambling market.

The law was presented on June 30, 2026, at 10:59 a.m. From the perspective of ASOM, the passage of the law occurred without adequate consultation with the industry stakeholders. Furthermore, ASOM asserts that the process lacked transparent and open negotiations, and failed to incorporate input from domestic or foreign experts who had cautioned that the proposed solutions were economically unfeasible and legally questionable.

The association’s critique focuses on the perceived lack of due diligence in drafting the law. ASOM maintains that the legislation overlooks established industry practices and expert warnings. They argue that the resulting framework for the gambling sector is flawed, potentially undermining legitimate business operations while failing to effectively curb illicit activities.

The impact on the existing legal market and the employment within the sector is a central point of contention for ASOM regarding the new law.
