Global trends indicate a decreasing use of antibiotics worldwide. In addition to antibiotics, medications such as metformin, pantoprazole, and diazepam are commonly used to treat various conditions, including diabetes, heartburn, and issues related to nerve calming. Sašo Klepovski, the Director of the Health Insurance Fund (HIF), recently presented data detailing the anticipated drug shortages spanning from 2023 to 2025.
According to Klepovski, the combined expenditure for drugs financed by both the Fund and the state in 2025 is projected to reach approximately 11 billion dinars. This figure represents the largest allocation within the funds designated for expensive therapies that fall outside the coverage provided by conditional bonds. Furthermore, Klepovski noted a significant escalation in drug shortages observed in 2023.
He stated that the shortage rate experienced a 34 percent increase, a growth attributed to the market introduction of new and costly pharmaceutical drugs. The data underscores the increasing financial burden associated with advanced medical treatments and the evolving consumption patterns of necessary medications.
