Minister of Health Azir Aliu presented proposed legal amendments concerning organ donation during a panel discussion held in Gostivar. These proposed changes aim to enhance public awareness and build greater trust within the community regarding organ donation procedures in Macedonia. A significant provision of the new legislation allows any full-term citizen to confirm their eligibility to donate organs to their maternal physician.
This direct access is intended to foster a positive connection between citizens and the concept of organ donation, thereby increasing public understanding and participation. Furthermore, the proposed framework expands the scope of permissible disclosures. The changes allow for the disclosure of available treatment possibilities and the identification of living donors, extending the reach up to the fourth degree of kinship.
All disclosures are mandated to strictly adhere to established ethical, medical, and legal standards. To manage this information securely, the system will utilize a new digital module integrated within the “My Term” platform. This module will facilitate the necessary disclosures without difficulty, requiring a robust double verification process.
By implementing these measures, the Macedonian legal framework seeks to streamline the process of organ donation while ensuring maximum protection for the rights and privacy of every citizen.
