Ten new cases of West Nile virus infection have been reported in the country over the last few days. All confirmed infections originated within the city of Skopje, with specific clusters noted in Kiselica Voda and Gazibaba, as well as Ilinden, Bute, and Aerodrom. According to the Ministry of Health, the individuals newly infected fall within the age bracket of 60 to 84 years old, and all ten patients required hospitalization.
At the University Clinic for Infectious Diseases and Fever States, a total of 16 patients are currently hospitalized. Of these, 15 patients have laboratory-confirmed infections, while 10 patients are categorized as suspected cases whose results are currently under examination. The Ministry of Health reported that three patients are in critical condition and have been intubated.
In response to the situation, a meeting was convened to address the care protocols for elderly individuals who have co-existing illnesses. Regarding the overall management of the patients, it has been decided through consultation that the remaining patients will be admitted to the hospital over the next few days. Health officials continue to monitor the situation to prevent the spread of the virus across the west region.
