West Nile virus cases have been reported in the region during the ongoing epidemic period. According to the Ministry of Health, the total number of recorded cases is currently being tracked, with a requested total figure of 20. The most recent infections among residents of Skopje are concentrated in an age group between 60 and 84 years old and have required hospitalization.
Geographically, case reports have been documented in several municipalities, including two instances each in Kisela Voda and Gabrovo, and single cases reported in Ilinden, Bule, and the Airport area. At the University Clinic for Infectious Diseases and Fever States, a total of 16 patients are currently receiving treatment. Of these, 15 infections have received laboratory confirmation, while one case is pending final test results.
The severity of the situation is highlighted by the fact that three patients are in critical condition and have required intubation. The Ministry noted a discernible trend, reporting that the overall number of cases appears to correlate with the advanced age of the affected patient. Monitoring continues to track the spread of the West Nile virus and the management of these associated cases.
