The town council of central Skopje has approved the VU-MRO-DPMNE minority plan intended for the urban development of the central district. This development proposal follows a period of debate regarding the city’s growth strategy. Previously, on July 14, a joint announcement by the majority SDSM and opposition VMRO-DPMNE signaled plans to construct housing on the southern outskirts of the city, a project that would necessitate the removal of established trees.
Despite this, the vote concerning the National-Urban Development Plan (NUDP) for the city center saw a division. The majority bloc, comprising members of SDSM and VMRO-DPMNE, voted in favor of the NUDP. Conversely, a significant opposition formed, including the majority of councillors from SDSM and VMRO-DPMNE, alongside representatives from “Chance for Central,” “Left,” ZNA, and specific council members such as Nenad Matevski of SDSM and Katerina Kostadinov of VMRO-DPMNE.
The approved plan now mandates a public referendum to gauge citizen sentiment. The final iteration of the urban development strategy will be formulated only after incorporating the feedback, comments, and suggestions gathered from the public during this referendum process.
