The Japanese architecture and nature struggle presented at the exhibition “Alternative Waterways in Japan”

The touring exhibition, “Built Middle: Alternative Waterways in Japan,” is currently on display at the MSU in Skopje, the Japanese Embassy in Skopje, the Museum of Contemporary Art – Skopje, and the Japanese Foundation. This display offers visitors a detailed perspective on Japanese architecture, design principles, and the complex relationship between human habitation and the natural environment in Japan. The exhibition encourages an exploration of Japan’s built environment, encompassing everything from architectural structures and engineered urban centers to natural landscapes and various cultural works found across its prefectures.

Visitors can engage with a comprehensive collection of materials, including photographs, textual descriptions, and video content. Through these resources, the exhibition illustrates how Japanese society has developed adaptive strategies to manage and coexist with the diverse challenges presented by nature. Given that the Japanese archipelago spans a vast climatic gradient, stretching from snowy northern regions down to subtropical zones, the exhibition highlights this geographical diversity.

The presentation aims to showcase not only the ingenuity of Japanese construction but also the cultural methods employed to harmonize human activity with the powerful natural forces characteristic of the islands.
