A historical military complex located in the former Yugoslav region of Croatia is drawing renewed attention. During the filming of “Terra Croatia,” a Yugoslav-Canadian documentary focusing on the military history of the island of Vis, photographer and adventurer Alain Banovic uncovered a subterranean facility on the peninsula of Musil in Pula. This extensive site dates back to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and served as a significant storage depot for underwater mines and torpedoes.
The structure is notable for its intricate design, described as a subterranean labyrinth. These tunnels were systematically connected to the primary military port situated in the nearby fishing village of Scumvic. Beyond its function as a munitions storage area, the complex contained various functional sections reflecting its operational use.
Within its passages, investigators identified areas originally designated as barracks or sleeping quarters for soldiers, alongside dedicated workshops and equipment storage zones.
