Petmina damaged on the track with a horse in Pamplona

A festival celebrating the patron saint of the city, Saint Fermin, commenced on Monday and is scheduled to conclude the following Tuesday. The event involves a traditional bull run, where approximately six bulls, some exceeding 600 kilograms in weight, are led through the narrow streets of the old town each morning. These bulls proceed toward the arena where bullfighting takes place later in the day.

While the main prize associated with the festivities is a horse, the bull runs have generated controversy. State media, specifically RTVE, reported that the horns of the bulls did not cause serious damage. Despite this assurance, concerns persist regarding the safety of the participants.

To date, three individuals required hospitalization following the events. The bullring itself spans approximately 825 meters, and annually, dozens of young men participate, testing their bravery in the arena. The history of the event includes a record of 16 fatalities since 1924, with the most recent recorded death occurring in 2014.

The nature of the spectacle, involving large bulls running through populated areas, continues to draw attention and debate, even when officials state that serious injury is not the expected outcome.
