Wolfgang Porsche, the Austrian-German car magnate, has withdrawn plans for a proposed 500-meter vehicular tunnel on a ridge in Salzburg and has decided to sell the historic villa that was the focal point of the controversy. This reversal follows significant public opposition to the development, which was framed by critics as a project serving only one owner. The controversy centers on the plans surrounding the historic property.

In 2020, Porsche acquired the 17th-century villa located on the outskirts of Salzburg for an initial purchase price of 8.4 million euros. The intended development included a specialized access route: a private tunnel designed to connect the city’s public parking area to an underground garage situated beneath the villa, facilitating parking for several vehicles. However, the project faced substantial hurdles.

Last autumn, city authorities denied Porsche permission for a substantial parking fee of 10 million euros, which was tied to the use of a rough gravel ridge area integral to the planned infrastructure. The scale and nature of the proposed tunnel, combined with the financial and civic disagreements, prompted the withdrawal of the plans. The decision to abandon the tunnel and sell the villa marks a definitive end to the ambitious development at the Salzburg site.
