Fourth World Conference on Religious Dialogue Addresses Religion’s Role in Conflict

Skopje, North Macedonia – From December 1st to 26th, Skopje will host the Fourth World Conference on Religious Dialogue, focusing on the theme “Religion as a Weapon of War: Past, Present and Future,” organized by the Center for Intercultural Studies and Research at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje. His Beatitude Archbishop of Ohrid and Macedonian and Justinian Prim G.G.

Stefan delivered the opening ceremony, stating that the world faces significant challenges, yet a sense of hope for peace persists. He emphasized that humanity is not immune to historical forces, but also not without agency. The core mission, according to the Archbishop, is to demonstrate fraternal solidarity in response to suffering, promoting inclusion as advised by Tsar David – “to stop the war of extermination.”

The conference, a collaborative effort between the University of St.

Cyril and Methodius and the Faculty of Philosophy, aims to examine the complex relationship between religion and conflict throughout history. Discussions will explore how religious beliefs and practices have been utilized, and sometimes exploited, in times of war. The event is expected to draw international participants dedicated to fostering dialogue and understanding among diverse religious communities.

The focus remains on identifying pathways towards peaceful resolution and preventing future conflict.
